Hop. Plop. Landed.
Airplop sends your photos, videos and folders to the devices around you, across platforms, over your local network. No cable, no account, no trip through the internet. And they arrive byte for byte.
Coming soon to the App Store and Google Play. A Windows version is planned for the Microsoft Store.
The promise
Four things, done well.
Nearby
On the same network, Wi-Fi or wired, your paired devices find each other on their own; another device shows up once set to “Everyone (10 min)”. Between two Apple devices, the system can also connect them directly.
Fast
Nothing goes through the internet: files go from one device to the other. Airplop can open several connections at once, and a whole folder goes in a single transfer, accepted once.
Intact
Nothing is recompressed: your HEIC, ProRes and RAW files stay HEIC, ProRes and RAW. Every file is checked on arrival and only saved if it is identical, byte for byte, to the one that left.
Private
No account, no server, no tracking. Transfers are end-to-end encrypted between your devices. Nothing goes through us.
How it works
Three steps, and it has landed.
Step 1. Open Airplop on both devices.
On the same network, your paired devices find each other on their own. For a first transfer, or between two people, the receiver first switches to “Everyone (10 min)”. On iPhone, iPad and Android, Airplop must be on screen.
Step 2. Choose what to send, and who to.
Photos, videos, files, whole folders, a text or a link, from the app. On Android, also from the Share menu; on Mac, also by drag and drop.
Step 3. The other accepts. Landed.
The recipient sees who is sending what before accepting. Between devices paired in “My devices”, it is accepted automatically, unless you turn that off for one of them.
The link
Through your local network. Directly between Apple devices, when the system can.
Both devices must be connected to the same local network: the same Wi-Fi, or a wired network (Ethernet). No internet access is needed, and nothing goes through it.
Between two Apple devices, Airplop also allows Apple’s peer-to-peer Wi-Fi: the system can then connect them directly, without going through the router. On Mac, this is the case while Airplop’s window is open.
Bluetooth is used to spot nearby devices; it is far too slow for large files. On iPhone, iPad and Mac, no file goes over it.
